Vacation Work Student at ICE Electrical
Background
In my first December holidays in my first year of studying in 2022, I was able to get a vacation work opportunity at ICE Electrical to be able to gain experience in the Electrical Engineering industry. They are an Electrical Engineering consulting firm based in Cape Town that specialises in the electrical work done in residential buildings, office buildings and schools.
My vacation work at ICE Electrical was a great experience as I got to meet and talk to people who were experienced in the industry as well as gaining skills that will be beneficial to become a better Electrical Engineer.
Tasks while on the job
My tasks included:
- completing electrical engineering drawings in Computer Aided Drafting software
- filling out bills of quantity documents based on projects expenses and work done
- going on site visits to ensure that work that was required to be done was actually done on site and to the level that was required
- sitting in on project meetings to discuss goals and requirements of the project
Practical skills that I gained
- Being able to plan electrical projects and explain the details that would be required for an electrical project in the properties and buildings sector
- Gaining proficiency in Computer aided software such as AutoCAD for electrical projects
- Gaining proficiency in Word and Excel for all admin works for a project
- Gaining the skills to be able to effectively communicate while on site and what to look out for in terms of an electrical project while on site
